Parental Consent Policy
Effective: April 17, 2026 · Operator: Lesson of the Day, PBC
The Daily Lesson is committed to protecting children's privacy and safety in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and international equivalents.
1. How Children Use The Daily Lesson
Children under 13 ("kids" age band) may only access The Daily Lesson through a Family plan managed by a parent or legal guardian. The parent's account is the primary account holder; the child's profile is a sub-profile within it.
2. What We Collect From Children
For child profiles, we collect only:
- First name (or nickname) — displayed to co-learners in live classes
- Age band — "kids" — for content filtering
- Language preference
- Lesson progress (days completed, quiz scores)
We do not collect email addresses, phone numbers, photos, precise location, or any other personal information directly from children.
3. Parental Controls
Parents manage child profiles from /you → Family:
- Create, edit, or delete child profiles
- View the child's lesson progress and class history
- Enable or disable live class access
- Set language and content preferences
4. Live Classes for Children
If live class access is enabled for a child profile:
- The parent must provide consent via a one-time verification step
- The parent receives an email notification each time the child joins a class
- Kids classes use the "Curious Kelly" pedagogical variant (age-appropriate language, simplified vocabulary, positive reinforcement)
- Class recordings for kids classes are retained for 30 days (extended from the standard 24-hour retention for adult classes) to support parental review and dispute resolution. Recordings are accessible only to the parent account.
5. No Direct Communication
We do not send emails, push notifications, or any direct communication to children under 13. All transactional communications (class reminders, progress reports) are sent to the parent's email address.
6. Parental Rights
Parents may at any time:
- Review all data associated with their child's profile
- Delete their child's profile and all associated data
- Revoke consent for live class participation
- Restrict data collection by deleting the child's profile
To exercise these rights: /you → Family or privacy@lotdpbc.com.
7. Data Security
Child profile data receives the same security protections as all user data: TLS 1.3 encryption in transit, encryption at rest, access controls, and minimal data collection. We do not use child data for advertising or share it with third parties beyond our essential service providers (see Privacy Policy).
