From Greek 'Lakonikos' meaning 'of Laconia' (the region around Sparta). The Spartans were famous for their terse, direct speech - when Philip of Macedon threatened invasion with 'If I enter Laconia, I will destroy Sparta,' the Spartans replied simply: 'If.'
