Excessive pride or self-confidence leading to downfall; arrogant presumption that defies moral order or divine will.

Etymology

From Greek 'hybris' meaning violent arrogance or insolence toward gods. In Greek tragedy, hubris was the fatal flaw that caused heroes' destruction. Entered English in the 19th century through classical scholarship.
