Definition

The selfless concern for the well-being of others, even when it costs you something. It describes kindness and generosity without expecting a reward.

Etymology

From French *altruisme*, coined in the 19th century by philosopher Auguste Comte, from Italian *altrui* (“other people”), based on Latin *alter* (“other”). It was created to name a moral principle focused on others rather than oneself.
